Camp Reach for the Sky Quilts
September 24, 2007
Dear Rosie,
Thanks so much for the beautiful quilt my daughter received this summer at CR4TS. She and her good friend both had their eye on it and couldn't decide which one of them should get it. Finally they decided to do "rock, paper, scissors"  and my daughter won. She said she felt bad because her friend also loved the quilt but they couldn't both have it, and they agreed on a fair way to choose, so overall she was happy. And her friend was glad it went to a friend.
She is 14 and just started high school this year. In November she will be 5 years post Bone Marrow Transplant! and 7 years since diagnosis with Leukemia. She still surffers from fatigue and often comes home from school wiped out and goes to take a couple hour nap. With her quilt of course! She especially loves the flannel fabric on the underside. She is so comforted by it when she doesn't feel good that I believe she truly feels the loving hands and caring heart that created it! Please give thanks to all your quilters for their generosity.
With Gratitude,
Sue

Hi Rosie,
I met you on February 14 when we came to your shop with "Quilting Retreats on the Go" from the Monarch of the Sea cruise ship.  You generously gave me three quilts and five hats to bring home to three boys that I home teach because they are too sick to go to school. Each boy and each family were thrilled when they received the quilts.
My little kindergartner, Michael,  was so thrilled with the Tigger, Winnie the Pooh quilt.  His older sister translated the story to him and his mother. Then Michael hugged the quilt and wrapped up in it and wouldn't let go of it for the rest of our session together.  My sixth grader, Jacob, and his family were so moved by your generosity.  He loved the quilt and the hats!  He said they were soft enough not to catch on his hair as it was growing out.  He is back at school now (yea!) and he chooses a different hat to wear each day.  He loved the quilt and the Americana theme was perfect for him! Zachary, my fourth grader was thrilled with the Jazzy Cat quilt.  One of the ways that this little boy gives back to the community is to volunteer one day a week taking care of abandoned cats at a shelter called Forgotten Felines.  So when he saw the cat quilt he thought it a perfect match for him.  His mom recently told me that during his last illness bout he never let go of the quilt. I have enjoyed sharing the story of your unselfishness and it made my trip extra special.  Rosie, thank you so very much for bringing so much joy and comfort to three little boys, their families and to me.  I look forward to seeing you next year as I just signed up for the February 07 Quilting Cruise! You are truly a very special lady.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Cooper

07/20/2003 - To the wonderful people at Rosie's. This year my son was able to attend resident camp in Julian. His name is Matthew and he is 8 years old. He had such a wonderful time at camp and arrived home with a huge smile and this years beautiful quilt. He picked out one with purple and white checks on one side and very colorful panels of animals and peppers and a broad border of panseys. He said he chose it because it had so much going on and made him fell happy. Thank you so much! He looks forward to getting his qilt each summer and will finish up chemotherapy this December. Your beautiful quilts have filled our home with so much warmth and love---thank you again! The Newman Family

Dear Ms. Gonzalez
Thank you so much for the Beautiful quilts my children were given at CR4TS. We are overwhelmed by the generousity and kindness from people whom we have never met. We thank you!. Our Son Ryan is 5. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 3. He is still going through treatment bu he is doing well. This 'unepected' journey we are on, has been difficult, but we have experienced so much love from many, many people. People who don't even know us or our son. It has been life changing and very inspiring. My son is the strongest person I know. He is our Hero and also our strength. An amazing spirit and we treasure everyday. Our daughter, Katie, was ver excited that she received a quilt too. Sometimes all the 'attention' goes to Ryan and she doesn't really understand why. This quilt made her feel important and special too! And that is so important within the entire families. Thank you so much for your kindness. Amy Wilcox

Ramona & Frank Herney wrote: Thank you so much! We believe Joe selected this beautiful quilt because of the dog prints included in
this work. We got this "mongrel" dog for him soon after he was diagnosed with Leukemia. The dog loves him and has been a great source
of comfort to him during his illness. The quilt is perfect for Joe. Your talents and generousity are truly appreciated! Grandpa & Grandma Herney.

This was my first year of camp at CR4TS, so this was the first quilt of yours that I have received.
I absolutely love my quilt. It is the most beautiful quilt I have ever seen. I got the quilt with the "American Flag" theme and the stars on the reverse side. Everywhere I went, counselors and campers were commenting on how beautiful my quilt was! Thank you so much for taking the time to give all of us your wonderful
quilts. It means alot to me and is something I will cherish the rest of my life. Thank you for helping to make my camp experience so wonderful.

Rosie: I've attached a copy of the quilt that you and the other ladies so lovingly made for Austin Felty. He's very proud of it and uses it nightly. We cannot thank you enough. My other kids are hinting that I should make THEM quilts for Christmas now.......... :)We are also so thrilled in our hearts that Austin just met his "5 year mark" of being cancer-free at the beginning of August. God has been so gracious to us...........Austin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocidic Leukemia in 1997 when he
was 2 1/2 years old. Our daughter was only 2 months old and nursing hourly. I was also still suffering from the post-partum blues and spent many hourscrying along with our daughter in the hallways at Children's.
Our oldest son was 7 and, unfortunately, neglected through a lot of this turmoil. While my husband and I stayed through the initial diagnosis with Austin at Children's Hospital S.D., our oldest was with friends.
Since Austin's diagnosis, he has spent quite a few Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays at Children's due
to pneumonia setting in on him that time of year. Actually, the food wasn't too bad! :) We live in the
Imperial Valley and our emergency services aren't the best either. Austin has been life-flighted by helicopter
a few times to Children's from our local hospitals and tells all his friends he's been in a helicopter and they
haven't! I must say, the Children's staff that accompanied him on those flights made it such a relaxing
experience for him.(like the time they blew up rubber doctor gloves and drew faces on them to make Austin
laugh) The Ronald McDonald house was often a home for us. We are so grateful! What a wonderful help
in a desperate time of need! Thank God for the folks who made that possible.Rosie, I want to truly thank
you from my heart for all you have begun and work hard to do for our kids with cancer. It's such a dark,
lonely time in our lives and you cannot know the precious beaming light you shine our way with your acts
of love.May God smile down on you! :) :) :)By the way, I'm an avid quilter myself and would love to hear of any opportunities that I can help in the future.
I visit your shop often when we have trips to Children's. Although the trip used to represent a nightmare experience for us - I now can't wait to make my
MUCH NEEDED stop at Rosie's for my fabric! Believe it or not, we actually BUDGET it in! :)
Love, Regina Felty

Thank you so much for the beautiful quilt I received at Camp Reach for the
Sky this summer (2001.) It had all my favorite colors in it (purple and
pink.) My mom is typing this message for me. I am also enclosing a picture of me
and my quilt. I will be taking my quilt to the hospital when I get my stem
cell transplant (early August 2001.) ........Delaney Wright
Thank you and all your volunteers for their wonderful work to brighten a
child's day and hospital room with your magical work. Delaney loves her
quilt and keeps it on her bed in her room when she is at home. When she is
in the hospital, it is on her bed there. Amy Wright

A Letter Received 08/18/00 Dear Rosie, Now that the pressing rush of Resident Camp is over, I have time to thank you for once again accomplishing the incredible tast of providing quilts for all the campers at Reach for the Sky Day Camp and Resident Camp. What an awesome performance! The quilts were even more beautiful this year than last-and such a good size! You should know that one of the resident campers who became ill on Tuesday and had to go home told me in the car as I drove her to meet her mother that she was very disappointed not to be there for quilt day. (I made sure she got a quilt!) Again, many thanks on behalf of the campers, the staff, and the American Cancer Society. You and all your quilters have certainly been a good friend of Reach for the Sky! I hope you will pass along our appreciation to those who worked so hard to make those wonderful quilts. Sincerely, Barbara Wiggins, Director - Reach for the Sky Day Camp.
A Note Received 08/17/00 My daughter and son were two recipients of your wonderful quilts this year at Camp Reach for the Sky day camp. My daughter Laurel has just had her one year anniversary of being cancer free from Leukemia. She is now 5 and doing great. Thank you for you beautiful quilts and for all the long hours and hard work everyone has done for the enjoyment of all these kids. I cannot tell you how much those quilts mean to my children. Thank you again. Shelley Mackey
A Note Received 08/15/00 Rosie, I just wanted you to know how much the kids truly appreciate your quilts. I am a psychologist and used to work in the oncology dept at childrens. I still see oncology patients and just today one of mine came in, fresh from camp, and was excited about his new quilt. It is his third, and definately a highlight each year. Please share with all the women who donate their time to make these quilts that they are appreciated more than they will ever know. It is truly a labor of love! Sincerely, Lori Rappaport, Ph.D.
A Note Received 05/15/00 I am so impressed with your quilts for camp reach for the sky. My mother works at KU Med Center in Kansas City, KS. She works with kids with cancer exclusively. They have a classroom for the kids that will be there for a while, and for the younger kids to "play" in a safe environment. After seeing these kids that she works with, I know that anything that is done like what you are doing is so appreciated by family, and staff alike. Keep
up the great work!!! Lisa Shenk

Hi - I just wanted to let you know how much the kids at the camps love the quilts. I have been a staff volunteer for about 6 years with the little ones at day camp. The kids love their quilts. I also work as a nurse at children's hospital in the critical care unit and occasionally take care of some of these kids. Many of them bring their quilts with them to the hospital and consider the quilts to be one of their security items. As a quilter myself, I know what goes into making a quilt, even a small one and I appreciate your work. Thanks to all of the volunteers.

Rosie - I thought that I would let you know about of of the women that works with me. I am new to the labor and delivery unit of Palomar hospital, and just learned that the birth certificate clerk's daughter in battling cancer of the leg. At the age of nine she had her right leg amputated and bravely continues her chemotherapy treatments. She refuses to go to the hospital until she is sure that her "Camp Reach for the Sky" quilt is packed. It has gotten her through some difficult times, and she is rarely without it. I look forward to joining your group to make other reach for the sky quilts.

Rosie -- Please pass this on to all the people who helped with the quilts for the campers
Once again, a fantastic job! The staff and campers love these quilts. Iwork at Children's in the oncology dept.,
and am a member of ASG San Diego Chapter. Most of these kids are current patients or long-term
patients of ours that are in remission. "Camp" is the main event of the year for them and the staff.
At our lunch table today, Jayne Hamlet who I'm sure you know, was describing some of the quilts to us.
Also, I saw some of the photos in her camp album. I just looked at your pictures on the web page--the quilts are gorgeous,
as are the kids smiles! I hope you are able to do this for them each year. We know it is a huge
project, but I can't think of a better one. Thank you all!

Dear Rosie and ALL the Incredible Quilters
On behalf of the campers and staff at Camp Reach for the Sky, I would like to thank each of you for the beautiful
quilts for each of our campers. The time, craftsmanship, and love that went into each quilt truly showed and the campers
loved each one. Many times during the week of camp I would look around and find one of our kids wrapped up in their
quilt or admiring their roommates. What a special gift for each of them.
In the days since camp many of the campers have returned to the hospital for chemotherapy treatments and with their
belongings are their quilts to place on their beds and keep them warm at night. Thank you so very much for kindness and
generosity.
