Check Cashing Policy - We require an California Drivers Licence and Work and Home phone number. We also require a 'Bank Thumb Signature' (thumb print). This is for our protection. The ability to prints ID's and Checks on the computer have made it easy for people to create false documents that look very real. If the check is returned and the documents are fake, we have no recourse, however, if the check has a 'Thumb Signature' then we can file with the City Attorney in order to recover our losses. If you do not wish to provide us with a 'Thumb Signature', you can pay with cash or credit card. Note: the number of returned checks in on the rise, or we would not have to implement these policies. We charge $25.00 for each returned check the first time and $50.00 the second time. Our bank DOES NOT RE-DEPOSIT, so to avoid charges by the bank and then by us, be sure you have sufficient funds to cover checks written. If you have a questions regarding this policy, please contact me at rozgonzalez@cox.net. Do not take it out on our staff, they are merely following directions and doing their job. Your cooperation if appreciated in this matter. |
Meet Barbara Brackman CLICK HERE
Barbara links her books, e-Clubs and Moda reproductions to give quilters lots of opportunities to create accurate reproduction quilts. Her most recent print projects include a few from Star Books. Flora Botanica: Quilts from the Spencer Museum of Art, is an exhibit catalog of antique quilts with patterns for reproductions. She's also been using her digital photo manipulation programs to create some very silly takes on classic paintings. See her 16 month calendar The Lost Quilt Masterpieces and a set of Notecards with more images.

In the 1850's Dona Juana de Dios Machado Alipas de Wrightington laboriously completed the oldest known quilt made in California. With influences from Boston Whalers, a mixture of international sailors, American traders, Hawaiian quilters, her own mestizo culture and the local religious community, Juana created a quilt completely her own.
The Old Town San Diego Quilt guild is in the process of re-creating this quilt. As part of our interpretive living history program we will be working on the quilt, while dressed in the 19th century attire, in the Plaza for all to come and watch.
Rosie's Calico Cupboard graciously donated the fabric. We will keep in contact with Rosie's and the Historical Society as our progress develops.
We meet every Wednesday in the Plaza at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Please come join us. We would love to have you pick up the needle even if for just a few stitches.

Pioneer Quilt Patterns & The Stories of their Names - Click here
Quilts were precious to pioneer women for many reasons. They not only warmed the weary travelers at night but also brought memories of old friends and hopes for a good life in the new land. Sometimes friends and family made a friendship quilt giving a pioneer woman a precious memento of loved ones so far away. Women also made quilts in anticipation of the journey. It's only natural that some quilt patterns favored by pioneers have names related to the journey and to their faith in God.
